Me in a tree, 2017. |
I somehow stumbled upon a YouTube inspiration called Emilia Fart and I have been binge watching heaps of her fabulous rants. She's incredibly open about EVERYTHING and it got me thinking about how much I have toned down over the years (yes, it's true).
Emilia chooses to wear things and express herself for her own joy and sanity. I think it's easiest to look at clothes as an example of this expression and in your teenage years and through your 20's it's a great time to experiment and do whatever you like. I did. I wore all sorts of things I thought made me interesting and really enjoyed the whole process.
These days I love wearing a hoody and even jeans. I didn't wear jeans much until I was over 35 because I didn't want to look like everybody else, it felt creepy. After 35 I didn't care that much if I did look like everyone else, cos you can put the woman in jeans but it doesn't necessarily take the quirk out of the woman.
Maybe part of 'toning down' is getting older and not giving a shit, but it can also be about listening to the social messages about who we are supposed to be.
I just googled what you shouldn't wear (or should) over 40 and here is a small selection:
No Cargo pants. The last time I wore cargo pants they were op shop army ones I cut off above the knee and wore with blundstones in the 90's. Ah, good times indeed. Now that I'm told I shouldn't wear them it makes me want to wear them.
No Matching Suity Things: Yeah, no worries on this one, though I wouldn't mind a man style pin striped suit .... (to wear for the consumption of coffee?).
No Short Skirts: So the rule is that it has to be to the knee or JUST ABOVE. NO! I don't care about my cellulite. I'm not saying I want to wear a belt as a skirt, but I don't see why everyone has to abide by such a rule. Shorter skirts are often way more comfortable in summer too.
Yes to A Classic Camel Trenchcoat : NO, I look ridiculous in trench coats, they're always made for tall people. Instead, I have many fine coats to choose from that include a vintage Scottish made wool coat, a long emerald green, a black fake fur and more!
You get the idea. We also are told to have a little black dress, a white shirt, how to wear lipstick, to never wear bold lips with a strong eye, to get eyelash extensions, to consider botox .... on and on it goes.
The thing is, with so many rules it creates a level of self consciousness that's exhausting to contemplate. I looked at some make up yesterday and there are products to do with contouring ... legions of young women (and possibly some men) are shading their faces, applying glowy stuff ... and they all end up looking the same. Like Kardashians. I have never watched any of the Kardashian stuff but I know who they are (kind of) because when you walk past a dairy or wait in the supermarket line there is usually something about one of them and her bum or lips on the front of a crappy magazine.
Emila Fart has blown away my cynicism of late. She is a fat, gorgous, funny, lesbian Queen and she's made me think about having more fun with what I wear again as well as adressing a lot of other very important issues. A hat? Why not? Red lips and too much eye pencil? Looks good to me. How about a nice serving of self care? I'll wear that too.
Ps, check out Emilia Fart talking about New Year's Eve, that's one of my favourites.
